We know by the manufacturer’s sticker pasted on our car window or by the kilometres driven, when we need to change the oil. This is the natural realm.

In the spiritual realm, we know through prayer and reading the Word when God is showing us we need to change our oil. When things aren’t oiled they become squeaky, rusty and dry. Many Christians become spiritually dry and rusty if they are not continually bathed in oil. In Job 28, Job said “the rock poured out oil for me.”
